UL 2809 Recycled Content Validation

To combat resource overconsumption and environmental pollution, countries worldwide are promoting the circular economy—aiming to boost resource efficiency, reduce waste, and encourage recycling and reuse. However, recycling carbon fiber has long been a major industry challenge. In the past, limited technologies made recycled carbon fiber difficult to trace, with inconsistent quality that discouraged adoption.

To address these concerns, the UL 2809 Recycled Content Validation was developed by global safety science leader UL (Underwriter Laboratories Inc.). This certification verifies the percentage of recycled content—both post-consumer and post-industrial—used in a product, helping build trust and credibility for environmental claims.

At Thermolysis, we are committed to transparency and advancing carbon fiber recycling. In 2022, we achieved UL 2809 certification, confirming that our recycled materials are traceable and genuinely sustainable. This strengthens the environmental value of our products and reflects our dedication to the circular economy and responsible innovation.

 

ISO 14067 Carbon Footprint Certification

As global efforts to combat climate change accelerate, reducing greenhouse gas emissions has become a critical priority. The ISO 14067 standard enables companies to measure a product’s carbon footprint through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), providing a clear understanding of emissions from raw material extraction to end-of-life. This empowers businesses to take informed, targeted actions toward climate goals.

To demonstrate the environmental benefits of recycled materials, Thermolysis partnered with TÜV Rheinland to certify our recycled carbon fiber production process under ISO 14067.In 2023, we successfully obtained certification, verifying that our recycled carbon fiber emits just 5.047 kg CO₂e per kilogram—only one-fifth the emissions of virgin carbon fiber. This gives our clients a clear and measurable carbon reduction advantage, while supporting compliance with global climate regulations.

Technology Patent – Microwave Assisted Pyrolysis (MAP)

At Thermolysis Co., Ltd., our core technology—Microwave Assisted Pyrolysis (MAP)—originated from the EU’s 7th Framework Programme (2009–2012). This patented innovation uses microwave energy to rapidly break down waste biomass into valuable materials and renewable energy, aligning with the principles of the circular economy. Since our founding, we’ve continued to enhance this technology and now hold patents in nine countries. Compared to traditional pyrolysis, MAP offers multiple environmental advantages:

  • High energy efficiency: Microwaves heat materials directly and evenly, reducing energy use and emissions. 
  • Clean and safe: The process requires no combustion, eliminating harmful gas emissions. 
  • High recovery rates: Precise control of temperature and reaction conditions allows us to recover maximum value from waste.


We’ve successfully applied MAP to regenerate high-performance carbon materials, especially recycled carbon fiber. Our process recovers carbon fibers with over 80% of the strength of virgin fibers, offering stable quality and environmental benefits. Today, Thermolysis is among the few global companies capable of large-scale recycled carbon fiber production. Our products reduce reliance on virgin carbon fiber and support low-carbon, sustainable materials. Looking forward, we aim to lead in carbon fiber recycling through ongoing MAP innovation, delivering circular solutions that benefit both the environment and industry.

2023 National Innovation Award – Enterprise Innovation Category

In 2023, Thermolysis Co., Ltd. was honored with the 20th National Innovation Award in the Enterprise Innovation category. Organized by the Development Center for Biotechnology (DCB), this prestigious award recognizes outstanding achievements in innovation, industrial advancement, and international competitiveness. The selection process is rigorous and credible, making the award a key benchmark for emerging enterprises and R&D teams across fields such as biotechnology, smart technology, and sustainable development.

Thermolysis received this recognition for our project, “From Waste to High-Value: Circular Recycling and Upcycling of Carbon Fiber.” Our solution utilizes patented Microwave Assisted Pyrolysis (MAP) technology to recycle waste carbon fiber and transform it into high-performance, high-value products. The process overcomes the limitations of traditional recycling methods, significantly improves material quality and strength, and reduces carbon emissions—realizing a truly circular economy.

Winning the National Innovation Award affirms both our technological leadership and our commitment to sustainability. By extending the lifecycle of carbon fiber and reducing dependence on virgin resources, we showcase the full potential of green innovation.

2024 Green World Awards – International Recognition for Environmental Excellence

In 2024, Thermolysis Co., Ltd. was honored with the prestigious Green World Award, presented by The Green Organisation, a UK-based non-profit dedicated to promoting environmental best practices worldwide. Established in 1994, the Green World Awards recognize outstanding achievements in environmental innovation, energy efficiency, circular economy, and corporate social responsibility. With a rigorous judging process led by international experts, it is one of the most respected environmental awards globally.

Winning a Green World Award is not only a mark of excellence but also a strong affirmation of a company’s contribution to sustainable development. Award recipients are invited to an international ceremony held at a world-famous landmark and may join the Green World Ambassador Program, connecting with global leaders to advance environmental progress.
